You can dilute the beer with about 50% water and it should still be ok, no point wasting perfectly good alcohol.

So we've just planted our first batch of cucumbers (about 500) and was thinking of adding the odd marigold or nasturtiums here and there to help deter pests and was wondering if anyone has done this with their crops and whether they actually helped or not?

Which pests are you hoping to deter ?

The main issue I think would be that as your cucumbers grow taller they will be out of reach of any protective effects of the shorter plants but that's more speculation than actual experience so would be interesting to see what anyone else has tried.

e2a: the word "Cucumbers"

Cheers man, I tried something similar last year but I think I'll try out your version of the spray to tackle those bastards and the other nasties that plague cucumbers.
What's BT?

I often look at jmty animals looking for rehoming.
Recently I have noticed quite a lot of hedgehogs listed.

I was wondering how an enclosed grow, either poly tunnel or a fenced in area would do with hedgehogs as pest control.
I know they really love slugs and snails and if one could get a few male and female from assorted sources (hopefully not close relatives) one could possibly have a really good self sustaining hedgehog patrol.

I can remember as a child going out into the garden at night to watch little hedgehog families wandering around. The babies follo one of their parents around in a daisy chain and the whole family makes the cutest noises talking to each other. They certainly love slugs and snails and other bugs.
